Sandberg decided in early 2012 to embark on a long-term, company-wide strategic deployment of memoQ as our preferred translation environment. We run our memoQ server internally with over 100 active user licences. Many of our regular freelancers have now also acquired their own memoQ licence.

One of our core objectives has been to avoid having our in-house translators working in a dozen different CAT tools, depending on the tool each of our clients chooses to use. Focusing on a single tool enables our translators to become highly skilled and proficient users of that tool, thus improving their efficiency and productivity while minimising the risk of technical errors.

Here are some of the main reasons why we chose memoQ:

memoQ already has industry-leading support for original file formats as well as intermediary file formats from many other CAT tools, and Sandberg has utilised this and supplemented it with solutions of our own to ensure robust pre- and post-conversion workflows for the file formats from most of the other CAT tools that our clients might use.

SDL Trados

Our founder Jesper Sandberg started working with Trados version 1 for DOS in the early 1990s and was one of the very first translators in the UK to buy the first version for Microsoft Windows in 1996. Since then, Trados products have been part and parcel of Sandberg’s workflows. Over the years, many of Sandberg’s project managers and translators have become very proficient users of the various translation tools from SDL, including recent incarnations of Trados Studio and Multiterm. Over the years, we have created numerous customised solutions to optimise our use of the software, including QC and consistency checking.

Trados 2007 was once an important tool for Sandberg, and although we have now moved on to more recent tools from SDL and other developers, we still receive a lot of work in the old Trados formats and fully support our clients who prefer to keep using these older versions. We also maintain a handful of licences for the latest version of SDL Trados Studio, and all of our translators are proficient users. Insofar as possible we now use a “round-tripping” workflow that enables us to handle almost all Trados projects in memoQ. It goes without saying that this is done in such a way that the actual translation work is always performed at least as well as it would have been in the original tool (and usually better) and that we completely ensure the technical integrity of all files that we deliver back to our clients.

Accross

Sandberg has an internally installed Across Language Server with a large number of  translator licences and cross-Grid licences to connect to other Across servers used by some of our clients. Across has garnered a lot of support from a number of large enterprise clients in recent years, and an increasing number of Sandberg’s translation company clients now handle regular work and often large projects in Across with which we are happy to assist.
