NORDIC TRANSLATION SPECIALISTS

Swedish translation services

Swedish is the native language of the majority of Sweden’s 10 million inhabitants. Through our dedicated Swedish translation services, we help companies that are not familiar with the linguistic identity of this nation cut the mustard when doing business in Sweden.

Entering the Swedish market

Spanning across 447,425 square kilometers, Sweden is one of the richest countries in the world in terms of gross domestic product per capita. While 89% of Swedes speak English, you’ll always have an advantage if you speak to them in their own language. If you want to impress them and create long-lasting trust, you need to localise your content into their way of thinking and tailor your communication style.

Key market entry considerations when launching new products or services in Sweden

Swedish consumers tend to be more committed to their favourite brands. Swedes need to be convinced before moving away from their chosen brands.

When it comes to online purchasing, the average Swedish consumer spends around 1000 euros annually, well above the European average.

Other than Swedish, Sweden also has five national minority languages including Finnish, Meänkieli (Tornedal Finnish), Yiddish, Romani and Sami.

Express commitment to the market with a long-term perspective and remember that visits are key because Swedish partners want first-hand assurance of your reliability.

Cultural Values

An essential piece of connecting with new potential customers is learning what makes them tick, as this can help you communicate more effectively with them and win them over. That’s why our Swedish translation services are underpinned by an in-depth understanding of integral Swedish cultural values, including:

About Swedish

Swedish (svenska) is a North Germanic language spoken by more than nine and a half million people, predominantly in Sweden and parts of Finland, where it has equal legal standing with Finnish and is mostly spoken along the coast and in the autonomous province of the Åland Islands.

Written Swedish has long been keenly cultivated as a symbol of national unity and strength, but it was only during the 20th century that a uniform written standard became available to all Swedes, with the orthography finally stabilising by the time of the spelling reform in 1906. Subsequent changes in social attitudes during the 20th century and a weakening of class distinctions resulted in some further development as formal writing practices changed.

The Swedish alphabet has 29 letters, including three that do not feature in the English alphabet: å, ä and ö.

Market-specific copywriting

Country-specific content that aligns perfectly with local customs, celebrations or cultural events.

Tone of voice

When it comes to multilingual communication, tone of voice can be one of the hardest things to get right. Our Swedish linguists adapt a text’s tone to match the expectations of a Swedish audience, understanding cultural nuances and keeping up with contemporary changes in the language. For example, Swedes prefer a neutral tone when it comes to marketing and an overly enthusiastic advertisement will likely fall flat. This is the knowledge that makes Sandberg’s Swedish translation services some of the best on the market.

ISO-certified

Sandberg was the first company in the UK to achieve both ISO 17100 and ISO 18587 certification. Whether the translation is done by our in-house experts or one of our carefully sourced freelancers, you can be confident that a translation produced by Sandberg will hit the mark.

Style guide

Sandberg has its own comprehensive style guide for Swedish to which all our translators adhere in their work, unless a client-specific or project-specific style guide takes precedence.
